  • Message from Fred Fontaine to the Citizens of Brockton

I came to Brockton, Massachusetts 20 years ago, because of affordable housing, good school, beautiful parks and friends who were already living here.

I have lived in Brockton for the past 20 years.  I am a home owner, a property owner, a family man, a business man.  My father is a NeuroSurgeon and my mother, a seamstress.  I have 3 sisters.

As one who was always taught to give back to the community, I am a man with strong values and a passion for improvement. I believe that the responsibility for the changes that are needed for Brockton to move forward are in the hands of the people.  We cannot just depend on city hall to make a difference, or think that if only we had enough money… In a democracy, the power is in the will of the people to do well. Together, we must put aside our differences, our apathy, and our excuses and get involved.  We must TEAM UP to improve our city from the bottom up and the top down.

To build safe and productive cities, Today’s leadership must be able to bring diverse groups of people together.  Political leaders must not be self- serving but be of service to those that elected them to carry out the will of the people. No special interest group should have the power to dictate policy or procedure.

Like many Brocktonians, in addition to political talk I want action and action.  Real change requires vision, a short and long term plan, implementation, and inclusion.  We need representation that shows us that they care and have the capacity to do the work that is necessary to move Brockton in the right direction.

    My platform will include:
    Economic Development
    Public Safety and
    Full Citizen Representation

In these three areas, I have a track record of active involvement, volunteerism and community leadership.

Economic Development, developing the downtown, cleaning up the city, and attracting new businesses can no longer be just empty phrases.  A clean city will reduce crime, attract business, new home buyers and set examples for others.

As councilor at large, I will make it my duty to lead the effort to clean up our city.  A city plan that includes: city hall, city organizations, churches, neighborhood groups, business associations, youth groups and all Brocktonians that want to walk the walk not just talk the talk.  Together, we can build a team that can and will make a difference. And this will be an ongoing effort not just a Brockton Clean up day.

We will attract new businesses by making City Hall more client friendly.  We need to update our infrastructure and help all people to be able to navigate their business with the city more efficiently and effectively. We must work together with positive and helpful attitudes towards all people.  We should examine best practices in neighboring towns and share knowledge and resources. We want accountability and transparency.

The health and well being of our city starts with Public Safety.
Brockton is a diverse mecca with over 72 languages spoken.  Understanding cultural differences and protocols will go a long way in creating respect among the many cultural groups in Brockton.  When there is inclusion and respect, crime is reduced, people work together, celebrate together, and they come forward with their ideas and solutions.

Both my wife and I we speak several languages, we will work hard to make sure there is more city wide communication, and the concerns of the people are responded to with real commitment and action.

I will also work diligently to build a strong public safety force of police and firefighters.  Our teachers also need more community wide support.  I believe that more diversity in our forces and broader representation will improve public safety and education for all Brockton residents.

To date, I continue to work with the Police Department, BEMA,
21st Century Corp, the License Commission, the School Department and many volunteer organizations.  I have received several awards for my active participation in working to improve, safety, morale, and productivity.

My promise to all Brocktonians is to use my energy to build strong teams of capable and compassionate people who will work together for a safer, healthier, more financially stable city, a city where people take pride in where they live and how they are governed.

I hope that you will give me the opportunity over the next few months of campaigning to share with you who I am, what I have done and intend to do to serve the constituents of this great city.  I believe Brockton has a positive future and that the change will come from the people who will no longer accept the status quo as the way it has to be.

Together, we can make the changes we all want to see.  Together, we can make Brockton a great city.

I am asking for your vote on September 15.  It will be my honor to serve the city of Brockton, and I will continue to work hard for your support.

    Respectfully,

    Fred M. Fontaine
    Candidate for Councilor at Large
